Psychiatric Disorders
Psycho-Oncology (3 ed.)

Psychiatric emergencies can be among the most concerning situations in the cancer setting. Maintaining the safety of patients, staff, and family is of utmost importance. Quick, efficient assessment of the emergency, awareness of strategies for diffusing the distress, and allowing the medical work-up or treatment to continue are primary goals of the oncology and psychiatry staff. This chapter reviews common psychiatric emergencies seen in cancer patients including agitation, anxiety-related emergencies, emergencies related to depression including suicidal ideation, as well as special emergent circumstances such as refusal to accept treatment and capacity to make medical decisions.
