A significant shift happening in the healthcare delivery system in the United States is the rise of the “engaged” patient and the focus on a more patient-centered system of care. This chapter discusses the intergration of care across healthcare systems, by leveraging new technologies, principles from behavioral and implementation science, and services from community-based organizations, thus increasing the opportunities for innovative solutions in meeting the needs of cancer patients. To truly engage patients, healthcare practitioners need to engage them at each step of the research process. The Cancer Support Community is exploring collaborations across multiple stakeholders in order to create a patient-powered research network, in which patients and their family members can help drive and shape the future of cancer care.
