Supportive care programs focus on maximizing the full benefits of biopsychosocial care and have the potential to transform cancer care. The emerging powerful incentives to focus on patient- and family-centered care and related performance outcomes create a unique zeitgeist for supportive care programs internationally. This chapter offers a framework that centers on the concept of leading by learning from colleagues, patients, and their families. Professionals with mental health training in particular have much to offer a healthcare system that is in peril and is grossly underachieving. Supportive care programs are uniquely situated at this time and place to address the major challenges to increasing quality and managing costs that are endemic to health systems around the world. This chapter provides an introductory framework and a common language in which to address and communicate the best of what supportive care programs have to offer.
