Of the symptoms experienced by patients with cancer, nausea and vomiting are among the most common, and can be profoundly debilitating. Great attention should therefore be placed on addressing these symptoms when dealing with cancer-related and end-of-life issues. Different strategies have been proposed to help guide clinicians in the management of these symptoms. A thorough evaluation of the patient and awareness of the pathophysiology of these symptoms allow for a systematic, targeted approach to treatment with appropriate pharmacologic agents acting against various receptors. Such approaches can alleviate symptoms in the majority of cases, thereby preventing deterioration of quality of life for patients and their families.
