Pain from burns has three components: background, breakthrough, and procedural pain.

Central sensitization is an important component of the ongoing pain.

Early management of pain, prior to the arrival at hospital is essential.

Multimodal treatment including opiates will be necessary and psychological support is key.

Procedural pain is of high intensity and short duration, and will require a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of analgesia.

Central sensitization and opiate tolerance are common problems in burns patients.
